GA-ASI’s Uncrewed Combat Aviation Portfolio Answers Call for High-End Warfare Capability

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), the company that introduced the world to unmanned warfare, has systematically transformed its aircraft lineup to address the defining requirements of modern high-technology warfare: range, persistence, payload, survivability, and scale against advanced adversaries.

The portfolio now spans from the company’s enhanced MQ-9B SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian platforms capable of long-range maritime strike, to the expeditionary Mojave STOL, to the Air Force’s newly selected FQ-42A Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) — its first uncrewed fighter — and, most recently, to the Wildfire Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA), a theater-range platform engineered for affordable, attrition-tolerant combat mass.

According to GA-ASI President David Alexander, the United States has entered an era where winning demands large, capable Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) that can operate from friendly airspace into contested environments affordably, without risking aircrews.

“We’ve never been a company that rested on its laurels,” said Alexander. “The conversation around uncrewed systems has changed, and frankly, it should. The battlefield has evolved, threats have evolved, and so have we. 

“We’re keeping ahead of the game, and, in the case of our FQ-42A and Wildfire aircraft, we’ve designed them from the start to overmatch threats today and into the future.”

Physics Demands Large Airframes

Losses in contested environments have prompted some observers to suggest moving away from large UAS platforms. Alexander sees those same operations as validation for continued investment in evolved large UAS.

“Yes, we’ve seen combat losses,” he said. “We’ve also heard Pentagon leaders call our Reaper the ‘MVP’ of the campaign. That tells you something important. When a system consistently delivers decisive effects, you modernize it and build on it. And I believe that’s where the Department of War is headed.”

Alexander emphasized that Reaper was purpose-built to provide persistent surveillance, long endurance, and precision strike. MQ-9A delivers these capabilities at scale and at a fraction of the cost of manned platforms that put pilots’ lives at risk, he added.

The proliferation of small drones — quadcopters, gliders, and short-range rockets — doesn’t change fundamental operational requirements, he said.

Despite the hype, smaller platforms “can’t change physics,” Alexander noted. 

“Long-range, high-payload, high-endurance missions require large, hefty airframes with significant wingspan, fuel capacity, and payload volume,” he continued. “If we are serious about surveilling and targeting across wide ocean areas, tracking mobile missile units, and holding adversary assets at risk from standoff distances, large UAS modernized for contested environments are the decisive advantage.”

Wildfire: Delivering Attritable Mass at Theater Range

Wildfire represents GA-ASI’s answer to a critical requirement: affordable combat mass that can sustain losses while maintaining operational pressure across contested theaters.

This theater-range, high-production UAS is designed specifically for high-threat environments:

Combat payload and range: Wildfire can carry two Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASM) or four Joint Strike Missiles (JSM) for meaningful combat distances and has a ferry range that exceeds 8,000 nautical miles. This enables delivery of weapons, sensors, electronic warfare capabilities, or communications relay deep into contested battlespace.

Modular architecture: Open interfaces and modular payload hard points enable modularity to support rapid mission reconfiguration, allowing commanders to adapt as threats and priorities shift during operations.

Volume production: Leveraging more than 5 million square feet of manufacturing capacity and advanced production processes, Wildfire is engineered to be built and fielded in numbers sufficient to absorb attrition while maintaining persistent theater-wide pressure.

Combined with Gambit Series capabilities, Wildfire delivers what defense leaders call “attritable mass”— large numbers of capable systems whose loss does not constitute strategic setback because they are affordable, uncrewed, and replaceable.

Gambit Series: Autonomous Combat Jets for Peer Threats

The Gambit Series represents GA-ASI’s family of autonomous jets for high-end contested operations. Built around a common core comprising roughly 70 percent of key components, the platform’s modular architecture drives down costs while simplifying production, logistics, and sustainment.

Recently selected by the U.S. Air Force for its CCA program, the FQ-42A — designed to fly alongside fighters like the F-22 — is a variant of GA-ASI’s Gambit 2.

Across six missionized Gambit variants, the architecture supports:

  • Long-endurance ISR in contested airspace
  • Air-to-air combat
  • Adversary training for advanced threat replication
  • Stealth reconnaissance in denied areas
  • Carrier-based naval operations
  • Penetrating air-to-ground strike and suppression of enemy air defenses

All Gambit aircraft are designed for human-machine teaming with advanced fighters and other UAS, extending sensors, adding weapons capacity, and imposing complex targeting dilemmas on adversary defenses — precisely the type of effects envisioned in modern Air Force operational concepts.

Mojave STOL: Airpower, Hold the Tarmac

Built on GA-ASI’s other pioneering aircraft, Mojave STOL addresses a critical vulnerability in modern combat: dependence on large runways.

Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) capability: Mojave STOL operates from austere, unprepared locations — open fields, dry riverbeds, even amphibious assault ship decks — generating uncrewed combat airpower from sites adversaries cannot easily target or predict.

Advanced sensor integration: Controllable via human-portable, laptop-based ground control systems, Mojave STOL carries cutting-edge radar, electro-optical/infrared, and signals intelligence payloads, providing a comprehensive operational picture for precise targeting and situational awareness to support dispersed forces.

In a combat environment where large runways are vulnerable to adversary strikes, Mojave STOL establishes airfields without airports. Its rugged construction enables persistent ISR and strike capability sourced from improvised mobile launch and recovery sites.

MQ-9B: Evolved Flagship Platform for Standoff Operations

MQ-9B SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian remain GA-ASI’s flagship multi-mission ISR platforms, now upgraded for long-range contested operations and integration into distributed kill chains.

Long-range weapons integration: New pylons with 30-inch lug spacing accommodate larger standoff munitions, including LRASM and JSM. Combined with MQ-9B’s advanced ISR suite, this transforms the aircraft into a long-range strike and maritime interdiction platform capable of engaging far outside adversary standoff ranges.

Resilient communications: Integration with proliferated Low Earth Orbit (pLEO) satellite constellations provides low-latency, high-bandwidth, jam-resistant connectivity. In combination with DoD-standard cybersecurity, MQ-9B maintains secure command-and-control and sensor links globally, even under electronic attack.

For Air Force and joint planners, MQ-9B has evolved beyond counterinsurgency roots into a standoff sensor-shooter that functions as a resilient node in distributed operations.

Urgency Driven by Evolving Threats

Alexander noted that changing battlefield conditions have continually driven the company to advance its technology and operational concepts.

“When you look at the threats we’re seeing in Ukraine and Iran, we already knew our aircraft would need to evolve, and we’ve been pushing ahead there for years now,” he said. “But it seems like every morning the news puts fresh urgency behind delivering that vital combat capability while finding ways to strip out some of what drives up costs.”

That urgency is backed by unmatched operational experience. To date, GA-ASI has accumulated nearly 10 million flight hours, the vast majority in combat operations.

Taken as a whole, Alexander said, the aircraft portfolio shows that GA-ASI is serious about retaining its position as the leading provider of UAS to the United States and its allies. 

“We know, to our core, what it takes to deliver relevant systems,” he said. “We have the people, infrastructure, and capacity in place, today, to do it at scale. 

“GA-ASI is ready to answer the call.”
