Retired Lt. Gen. William O. Senter, 99, died April 19 in Palm City, Fla. The Texas native graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1933, achieved his pilot wings in 1934 and served initially with a bomb squadron. After completing a course in meteorology, he entered the weather field, ultimately serving as deputy chief and later chief of the Air Weather Service. In 1953, he became commander of the Oklahoma City Air Materiel Area and from there to Air Material Command and assignments at the Pentagon. When an F-16 fighter jet crashed into the Yellow Sea off the coast of South Korea on Jan. 31, 2024, it was because of a hardware failure that stalled the engine, which the pilot could not get started again despite multiple attempts, according to an investigation report released Aug. 22.
