Three Wyoming Air National Guard C-130s, equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System, drop 685,000 gallons of water and fire retardant on fires in Java and Sumatra; each airplane drops up to 3,000 gallons at a time. The Wyoming airmen fly some 194 sorties before the operation ends in early December.
Defense industry leaders say the Air Force needs to be able to update the software on its munitions multiple times a day, not every few months, and a new Pentagon instruction released last week could enable that.
