The 30th Space Wing at Vandenberg AFB, Calif., and the 75th Civil Engineering Group at Hill AFB, Utah, are among the recipients of the 2012 Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards. Each year since 1962, the Defense Secretary honors individuals, teams, and installations for their outstanding achievements to conserve and sustain the natural and cultural resources under the Pentagon’s stewardship. A panel of judges representing federal and state agencies, academia, and the public recognized the 30th SW in the installation category for its cultural resources management and the 75th CEG in the same category for its environmental restoration, stated Pentagon officials May 1. A ceremony honoring the winners will take place June 6 in the Pentagon. (DOD release with full list of winners) (See also San Antonio-Lackland release.)
A new report from the Government Accountability Office calls for the Pentagon’s Chief Technology Officer to have budget certification authority over the military services’ research and development accounts—a move the services say would add a burdensome and unnecessary layer of bureaucracy.
