Polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, have been found in soil samples of about 100 homes in a section of military family housing near the southwest gate of Hill AFB, Utah. The Deseret Morning News reports that construction crews detected the PCBs while renovating the housing. A base official told the newspaper that an investigation is underway to determine the extent of the contamination, but the Air Force does not believe the situation presents an immediate human health hazard.
The Air Force has embraced new technical approaches like open mission systems and rapid software updates for cutting-edge aircraft like the B-21 and Collaborative Combat Aircraft. Increasingly, though, the service is also working to apply these to its older, “legacy” aircraft, officials said this week.
