A Dec. 9 US airstrike near Saakow, Somalia, killed a member of the al-Shabaab terror group without harming any civilians, according to US Africa Command assessments.

Saakow is located within the Middle Juba region of Somalia. The strike was coordinated with the Somalian government.

“We continue to work closely with our Somali partners to take decisive action to weed out terrorists who wish to do harm to the Somali people,” said Army Brig. Gen. Miguel Castellanos, the command’s deputy director of operations, in a release issued the same day.

This marks the first US airstrike in the country this month. The US carried out three airstrikes targeting al-Shabaab members in November.
