The Army establishes the 1st Aero Squadron (Provisional), which consists of nine aircraft, nine officers, and 51 enlisted men. 1st Lt. Roy C. Kirtland, whose name would be given to the former Albuquerque Army Air Base in 1942, commanded the Squadron from June to November 1913. The provisional was dropped in December 1913, and the squadron became the Army first regular air squadron. It is the military’s oldest flying unit.
