Britain takes the historic step of creating the world’s first formally recognized, independent air arm, with its own governmental ministry, and its own uniform and rank structure. The Royal Air Force is formed as an amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Maj. Gen. Hugh Trenchard is named as the first RAF chief of staff.
