US military facilities will stay at a heightened state of security “for some time” as the country faces a continued threat from ISIS, the military officer in charge of protecting the homeland said. Adm. Bill Gortney, commander of US Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, said Oct. 7 that he raised the force protection level to Bravo in the spring because of the threat from ISIS against the US military at home. The terrorist group has a “very sophisticated social media campaign” that motivates citizens in their home countries to take action against their own fellow citizens, Gortney said at the Atlantic Council in Washington, D.C. The threat from this group continues, but it is hard to determine where and when any threat could come, he noted. Intelligence can track those who interact with ISIS online, but the military needs to worry about those in “receive mode,” who do not respond but can receive information from ISIS and are harder to track, Gortney said.
