The Maine Historic Archeological Sites inventory list includes the crash site of a B-52 that went down on Jan. 24, 1963 on Elephant Mountain, but that hasn’t stopped people from stealing pieces of the wreckage, reports the Bangor Daily News. Seven airmen died in the crash. According to local officials, the thieves are not seeking memorabilia; they want the metal. Visitors to the site recently interrupted two men filling containers with metal chunks.
