The Pentagon is planning to spend $20 million on improvements at Mihail Kogalniceanu AB, Romania, now used by US forces as a training area and way station for troops headed to the Middle East., reports Scott Schonauer of Stars and Stripes. Hotel owner Gheorge Enache and other local businessmen look forward to an economic boost when American service members are rotated into the area.
Air Force depots are not typically meant for quick repair jobs, but during Operation Epic Fury, the service moved some of its stateside heavy maintenance capability forward to fix battle-damaged aircraft closer to the fight.
