Retired Maj. Gen. George M. McWilliams, 83, died on June 2 from complications from a stroke. McWilliams was a World War II fighter pilot who “became the first federally recognized Air Force general in the Mississippi Air National Guard,” according to the AP story in the Sun Herald.
The six-week government shutdown did not affect the hours flown by Air Force pilots, a service spokesperson told Air & Space Forces Magazine—avoiding what could have been a major blow at a time when flying hours are already lower than they have been in decades.
