The landing gear of a C-5 Galaxy collapsed as the massive airlifter was preparing to take off from Charleston AFB, S.C., on July 14, according to The State newspaper. The Air Force reported there were no injuries to those onboard. The C-5 is assigned to Dover AFB, Del.
Retired Col. Carlyle "Smitty" Harris, known for introducing the "tap code" by which American POWs in North Vietnam could surreptitiously communicate with one another, died July 6. Harris was brutalized by the North Vietnamese over almost eight years of captivity.
