Maj. Gen. Hank Morrow relinquishes command of 1st Air Force (Air Forces Northern) to Maj. Gen. Garry Dean Thursday during a ceremony at Tyndall AFB, Fla. Gen. Gene Renuart, US Northern Command boss, and Gen. William Fraser, head of Air Combat Command, will officiate at the ceremony. Morrow has led 1st AF, which is responsible for the air defense of the continental US, since November 2006. He will become US Defense Representative to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Exactly 100 years ago, on Dec. 17, 1925, Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell was convicted by court-martial for violating an order that required approval before he could engage with the media. Mitchell’s provocative thoughts and unorthodox methods sought attention for a cause that he saw as uniquely American.
