Malmstrom AFB, Mont., Patrick AFB, Fla., and Peterson AFB, Colo., were the top winners at Air Force Space Command’s Guardian Challenge 2006. Malmstrom’s 341st Space Wing received the Blanchard Trophy for Best Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Space Wing. The 45th SW from Patrick took home the Schriever Trophy for Best Space Launch Wing. The emphasis on speed in the Pentagon’s newly unveiled slate of acquisition reforms may come with increased near-term cost increases, analysts say. But according to U.S. defense officials, the new weapons-buying construct provides the military with enough flexibility to prevent runaway budget overruns in major programs.
