According to a July 20 EPA release, the agency and California agreed to a cleanup plan for Parcel C-6, a 62-acre site on the former McClellan Air Force Base, in a “first of its kind” decision in which DOD ceded authority to EPA to select a clean-up plan for a Superfund site. EPA says that a private redevelopment company, McClellan Business Park LLC will conduct the cleanup under EPA and state oversight, using Air Force funds. The EPA says, “Allowing a private company to conduct the cleanup accelerates the cleanup and redevelopment process so the area can be put back into active use sooner. The Air Force closed McClellan, the site of the former Sacramento Air Logistics Center, in 2001 following a BRAC 1995 decision. The rest of the base, about 3,000 acres, may also undergo a private cleanup approach, said EPA.
