GPS Goes Net-Centric: The 2nd Space Operations Squadron at Schriever AFB, Colo., is finishing up delivery of the Zero Age of Data Navigation Message Replacements on the secure Internet protocol router network (SIPRNet), providing the ability to deliver Global Positioning System information online. Divorcing users from a reliance on “fragile” signals in space is a “historic achievement,” said Maj. Chuck Daniels, the GPS operations center director. The first end user of the new data stream is Air Combat Commands’ small diameter bomb program, where the bomb’s GPS accuracy requirements are more stringent than what is available directly from satellite. The Army has long been dependent on space capabilities to navigate terrain, communicate in hard-to-reach areas, and identify and strike targets. Now, the service wants to deepen its space operations expertise and is making plans to expand its own cadre of operators in the coming years.
