Airmen of the 682nd Air Support Operations Squadron at Shaw AFB, S.C., are nearing the end of testing on the new Gateway vehicle mounted communications system, which enables an Air Support Operations Center and Joint Terminal Attack Controllers to click a button to get vital targeting data to pilots instantly. A test of the system during a recent Central Command Air Forces Atlantic Strike exercise showed a 47 percent reduction in the time needed to exchange data. “Anytime we can process and take out targets faster and more efficiently, it can potentially save the lives of US troops and friendly forces,” said SSgt. U.S. Southern Command recently announced its first lethal strike on a suspected narco-trafficking vessel in two months, and the first under a newly formed permanent counter-cartel task force. The U.S. is also reportedly planning to transfer MQ-9 drones to Colombia to bolster its counter-cartel efforts.
