52nd Fighter Wing Identifies 2 Airmen Found Dead in Spangdahlem Dorm

The 52nd Fighter Wing identified the two airmen whose bodies were discovered “unresponsive” Jan. 9 in a dorm at Spangdahlem AB, Germany. Pronounced dead soon after were A1C Xavier Leapheart, 20, and A1C Aziess Whitehurst, also 20.

The two airmen were assigned to the wing’s 52nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, according to a Jan. 12 release. The causes of death were still under investigation as of Jan. 11, according to the wing.

“It is always very difficult to lose valued members of our team,” 52nd FW Commander Col. David Epperson said in the release. “Our sincerest and heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and families that have been affected by this tragedy.”

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations is leading the investigation into the two deaths with backup from the 52nd Security Forces Squadron.

Both airmen are survived by their parents, the release said.
