Ongoing Response for Haiti: 
Defense Secretary Bob Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, JCS Chairman, told reporters (transcript) Friday that the US military is working with other US entities and international relief efforts to provide support to the people in Haiti following the Jan. 12 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated the island nation. Gates said that 1,000 US military members already were in Haiti, aiding relief and rescue operations, with a total of about 10,000 expected over the weekend. Mullen noted, “In this situation, the military is best able to supply security, search-and-rescue capabilities, potable water, and medical supplies.” The Navy has various ships providing assistance; the Army and Marine Corps have personnel on the ground. Within hours of arrival Jan. 13, airmen opened up the international airport, marshalling a hectic flow of US and international aircraft, including USAF transports from around the country airlifting military and civilian aid workers, supplies, and equipment.
