Airstrikes Shift Deeper Inside Iran as US Gains Air Superiority

Control of the skies in Operation Epic Fury is enabling the Pentagon to rely more on satellite- and laser-guided bombs, throttle back on expensive long-range standoff munitions, and move to a new phase of air war, defense officials said on March 4.  Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine said the degrading of Iran’s air defenses had enabled the U.S. to achieve air superiority in the southern part of the country, enabling strikes deeper inland.

Pentagon Identifies 5th Service Member Killed in Kuwait Drone Attack

The Defense Department late March 4 released the name of the fifth U.S. service member killed over the weekend after an Iranian drone struck a tactical operations center in Kuwait. Maj. Jeffrey R. O’Brien, 45, of Indianola, Iowa, died on March 1 at Shuaiba Port during an unmanned aircraft system attack, the Pentagon said in a statement. O’Brien was an Army Reserve soldier.

Gaucher Takes Over Submarine ‘Czar’ Role, Overseeing Virginia, Columbia-Class Production

Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher is officially in place the Pentagon’s first-ever submarine “czar,” with the Navy telling Breaking Defense he took office on Feb. 23. Gaucher is the Pentagon’s first Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Submarines, reporting directly to Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg. ... He becomes the second DPRM, following Air Force Gen. Dale White’s elevation to the role in November.

New Mexico Authorities Ask for Help in Search for Former AFRL Commander

The FBI has joined a search in New Mexico for a former commander of Air Force Research Laboratory, the Air Force’s science and technology lab. ... The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office in Albuquerque, N.M., has asked for the public’s help in locating 68-year-old retired Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland, who was last seen around 11 a.m. Feb. 27 in an Albuquerque neighborhood.
