The 30th Space Wing, Vandenberg AFB, Calif., has deactivated the 2nd Space Launch Squadron and activated a new unit—the 30th Launch Control Support Squadron—with a broader mission. The 2nd SLS was charged with Titan rocket operations. The Titan era ended at Vandenberg with the launch of the last Titan IVB. (DR, 10/21/05) Officials say the 30th LCSS will handle “factory-to-flight payload processing support, training, and management of launch infrastructure.”
The U.S. military is maintaining a beefed-up presence in the Middle East, including fighters and air defense assets, following the U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities June 22 and subsequent retaliation by the Iranians against Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
