The 60th Air Mobility Wing recently sent its last remaining legacy C-5 Galaxy to Lockheed Martin for upgrade to C-5M standards from Travis AFB, Calif. “The final C-5M will arrive back at Travis [in] December 2017,” 22nd Airlift Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge TSgt. Samuel Callison said in a base release. “This will increase the capability … to fulfill combatant commander requirements more effectively,” he added. Travis received its 12th C-5M back from Lockheed’s conversion line at Marietta, Ga., a day later on August 5, according to a company release. The former C-5B, serial number 86-0026?, came less than three weeks after the delivery of Travis’ 11th C-5M at the end of July. The Air Force is upgrading a total of 52 legacy C-5s to Super Galaxy standards, incorporating new engines, avionics, and airframe reliability improvements. Travis’ last legacy C-5 departed for Marietta Aug. 4.
