Air Force Space Command’s Standard Space Trainer Integrated Training Center, or SST, is up and running at Schriever AFB, Colo. The new center, with equipment like large, high-definition wall monitors and multiple computer workstations, is a dedicated facility for training airmen who operate USAF’s satellites. “This represents a quantum leap forward,” said Col. Michael Mason, vice commander of Schriever’s 50th Space Wing. Until now, satellite operators have trained using systems with different hardware, operating systems, and proprietary software. SST offers a common training architecture. “The flexibility and versatility of this system is absolutely amazing,” said Mason. Instructors are already training Defense Satellite Communications System operators. Next year, Wideband Global Satellite Communications system training will commence, followed by instruction on additional satellites over the next five years. The rate of building B-21 bombers would speed up if the fiscal 2026 defense budget passes. But it remains unclear how much capacity would be added, and whether the Air Force would simply build the bombers faster, or buy more.
