The US Ambassador to Japan, Thomas Schieffer, and Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright, US Forces Japan commander, flew with the supplies to meet with Japanese officials. Schieffer called the airlift a “small gesture to say thank you” for Japan’s help during Hurricane Katrina.
