The Air Force has created Palace HART—for Helping Airmen Recover Together—to aid airmen injured in the global war on terror. The Palace Hart program will help those airmen who cannot return to active duty explore other options, such as government civilian service or continued education. Each injured airman who must separate or retire gets a program case manager, who will advise the airman for up to five years. “Every effort will be made to assist [injured airmen] and their families in the transition to civilian life,” said Bill Sherman, who oversees the program for AFPC.
A new report from the Government Accountability Office calls for the Pentagon’s Chief Technology Officer to have budget certification authority over the military services’ research and development accounts—a move the services say would add a burdensome and unnecessary layer of bureaucracy.
