Officials at Vandenberg AFB, Calif., told the Lompoc (Calif.) Record that they plan to move the remaining 29 families from east base housing by the end of the year because the 1960’s vintage housing is too costly to maintain. They also said that they don’t know yet whether they will demolish the 633 houses comprising East Vandenberg or just fence them off. Money—or lack thereof—is the deciding factor.
Air Force depots are not typically meant for quick repair jobs, but during Operation Epic Fury, the service moved some of its stateside heavy maintenance capability forward to fix battle-damaged aircraft closer to the fight.
