This year’s Association of the United States Army’s annual meeting buzzed with talk of countering the rapidly evolving drone threat facing the entire U.S. military, including the Air Force. Leaders and defense industry officials discussed the need for new approaches to procurement and employment of a new class of these weapons.

Head of the US Military’s Southern Command Is Stepping Down, Officials Say

The military commander overseeing the Pentagon’s escalating attacks against boats in the Caribbean Sea that the Trump administration says are smuggling drugs said on Thursday that he was stepping down. The officer, Adm. Alvin Holsey, is leaving his job as head of the U.S. Southern Command, which oversees all operations in Central and South America, even as the Pentagon has rapidly built up some 10,000 forces in the region in what it says is a major counterdrug and counterterrorism mission.

‘Space Armor’ to Challenge Traditional Metal Shielding on Satellites

Atomic-6, a composite materials manufacturer based in Marietta, Ga., believes it has found a lighter, more resilient alternative to traditional satellite shielding. Following successful lab tests of its “Space Armor” shielding that protects spacecraft from debris impact, the company is preparing to demonstrate it in orbit and start producing it for the U.S. Space Force and other organizations.
