The Arizona Air National Guard’s home in Phoenix has a new name. The base at Sky Harbor International Airport is being renamed the Goldwater Air National Guard base to honor former air Guardsman, Arizona senator, and presidential nominee Barry Goldwater, according to The Associated Press. The naming officially took place during a ceremony on Friday. The base is home to the Guard’s 161st Air Refueling Wing, a KC-135 unit.
The six-week government shutdown did not affect the hours flown by Air Force pilots, a service spokesperson told Air & Space Forces Magazine—avoiding what could have been a major blow at a time when flying hours are already lower than they have been in decades.
