The Air Force Weather Agency just introduced the newest fine-scale computer-forecasting program, the first to be developed in almost a decade. Called the weather research and forecasting model, or WRF, the system is more accurate and efficient than previous models and will help improve weather forecast accuracy. An Air Force release says that it also will improve mission execution for the precision airdrop system, target acquisition weapon software, and field artillery targeting applications. Future WRF models will add even more fine-scale resolution and improved accuracy.
The Space Force is playing midwife to a new ecosystem of commercial satellite constellations providing alternatives to the service’s own Global Positioning Service from much closer to the Earth, making their signals more accurate and harder to jam.
