A new spy satellite program, dubbed BASIC, is in the offing and will be “significantly less ambitious” than the Future Imagery Architecture program cancelled two years ago, reports Associated Press. Details of the National Reconnaissance Office program are classified, but “US officials” told AP comments on a request for information were due last month and the Pentagon is conducting an analysis of satellite capabilities and expects to issue a request for proposals in the spring. To keep the cost manageable, the Pentagon might opt for buying or leasing a commercial imagery satellite.
The Pentagon needs a Digital Command and a Digital Warfare Corps, along with other changes, to take advantage of critical new technologies, according to a think tank founded by former Google CEO and Chairman Eric Schmidt.
