Air Force Pilot Becomes First to Reach Mach 3

Sept. 27, 1956

U.S. Air Force Capt. Milburn Apt reaches Mach 3.196 in the Bell X-2, becoming the first pilot to fly three times the speed of sound. Apt is killed, however, when the aircraft tumbles out of control.
