MSgt. Joseph Jarboe III, an explosive ordnance disposal technician, has received a Bronze Star for his work while deployed to Baghdad Airport in Iraq last year. Jarboe, with the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Barksdale AFB, La., led his EOD team and Army security elements on numerous missions hunting for unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive devices. He supervised the neutralization and disposal of more than 35,000 pounds of enemy explosives and 130 IEDs.
Retired Col. Carlyle "Smitty" Harris, known for introducing the "tap code" by which American POWs in North Vietnam could surreptitiously communicate with one another, died July 6. Harris was brutalized by the North Vietnamese over almost eight years of captivity.
