Airmen currently assigned to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, recently got a visit from a US Air Forces in Europe assignments team to sort out their fates following the announcement that the US was pulling American forces out of the facility. The team fielded questions on potential assignments and family situations, but it could not yet provide a date for the cessation of Air Force operations. All plans, said USAFE officials, await an execute order from the Chief of Staff.
The Air Force is spending heavily on F-22 improvements through the end of the decade, suggesting it may not retire the jet in 2030 as it previously planned. New sensors, fuel tanks, communications, and electronic warfare systems are among the upgrades that comprise the package.
